LenioBio secures EUR 2.2M of European Defense Fund grants for the production of critical medical countermeasures with ALiCE®

DÜSSELDORF, Germany – 06 01, 2026 – LenioBio GmbH has been awarded European Defense Fund grants for two actions within the RESILIENCE framework partnership agreement (FPA).

With the RESILIENCE-R-2024 SCAV sub-project, LenioBio will participate in the development of next generation enzyme scavengers. Elsewise, RESILIENCE-D-2024 PROT PROD focuses on development and technology assessment of alternative manufacturing platforms for protein-based medical countermeasures in a scalable and Good Manufacturing Practices-compatible format, improving production speed, scalability, and cost-efficiency while reducing dependency on traditional methods.

“These grants are a powerful validation of ALiCE® as transformational infrastructure for Europe’s biomanufacturing resilience and sovereignty,” said André Goerke, CEO of LenioBio. “ALiCE® enables an entirely new paradigm: producing complex, high-value proteins at unprecedented speed and flexibility, precisely where and when they are needed. This capability fundamentally changes how medical countermeasures—and future therapeutics—can be created. Building on this momentum, we are eager to combine ALiCE® with AI-led, high-throughput protein design to unlock the next generation of breakthrough biologics.

The actions involve collaborations among 29 organizations from 11 European countries[A1] , including military, academic and industrial partners and aligns with the priorities of the European MoDs (Ministries of Defence). The ultimate goal is to develop new medical countermeausres (MCMs) against chemical and biological threats that fulfil military operational and functional requirements. The project will lead those innovative MCM candidates to TRL 4-5 toward knowledge generation, integration and studies activities, enhancing Europe’s security, strategic EDTIB (European Defence Technology Industrial Base) autonomy and security of supply.

About RESILENCE FPA:

The European Union faces security challenges due to international instability, exemplified by the war in Ukraine and the COVID-19 pandemic. Among these are rising Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) threats. To enhance resilience, it is crucial to develop medical countermeasures (MCMs) to protect both military and civilian populations. To address this gap, the RESILIENCE FPA was established in 2022, providing a multi-annual action plan to strengthen European MCM research.
